It is a dioecious species endemic to the Canary Islands, although it has been introduced in many regions.
Robust trunk up to 80-90cm in diameter and 20m in height, faster growing than Phoenix Dactylifera and with deep green leaves.
Temperature range between -10ºC and 30ºC, withstands frosts, but very sporadic and not intense.
Requires moderate watering, more frequent in summer than in winter.
Blooms in spring and summer in hanging clusters that can reach up to 2m in length in the female clusters.
Its fruits are small, edible dates, although they do not have the flavor or commercial value of P.Dactylifera dates. They ripen in autumn, from November to December.
