Originating from southern Japan, it is one of the oldest plants on the planet, with fossils dating back more than 250 million years.
People tend to call it a "palm," but it really isn't one.
They are gymnosperms, perennial, slow-growing, and dioecious. They can reach 1-3m in height and are toxic.
Their temperature tolerance range is between -10ºC and 40ºC.
They require moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry between waterings, as waterlogging is harmful to them.
They do not have a typical flowering, as it manifests in the form of cones, and this "flowering" occurs in spring/summer. Being dioecious, there are distinct male and female plants.
Their fruit is also unique, as it is a "false drupe," where the seed is located, which is particularly toxic.
For all these characteristics, we consider cycads a "special plant."
