Originating from the region that stretches from Iran to the Himalayas, it has been cultivated since ancient times in the Mediterranean basin.
A deciduous and thorny tree up to 5 m in height.
Extreme temperature range -10ºC to 40ºC.
Requires regular watering in the first years. Once rooted, it tolerates drought, although to fruit under good conditions, it requires more abundant watering in summer.
Large and showy flowering of intense red color in late spring and early summer.
The fruits begin to be harvested from mid-September to mid-November, depending on the variety.
A curious fruit as it is considered both a berry and an infructescence.
